Fourth Position

The fourth basic position requires the feet to be flat on the floor and turned out (pointing in opposite directions as a result of rotating the legs at the hips).

One foot is about 12 inches in front of the other. Weight will be distributed evenly between both feet.

There are two types of fourth position: open and closed. In open fourth position the heels are in line with each other. In closed fourth, the heel of the front foot is aligned with the toe of the back foot. Whether the fourth will be open or closed depends on the method, the teacher's preference, and/or the movement being performed.
