Dance Wardrobe Guide

What should I wear to class? This is a common question I get from both current and potential students! The key is to not overthink it. Ballet class wardrobe does not have to be the classic pink tights and tutu that you are imagining! In today’s blog, I will offer the “what” and “why” when it comes to ballet class clothes.

Shopping List:

  1. Tights

  2. Leggings

  3. Tank Tops

  4. Leotards

  5. Yoga Pants

  6. Ballet Shoes (This is optional. The alternative would be socks without the rubber lining on the bottom.)

  7. Hair Tie and/ or Bobby Pins (It is important to wear any long hair in a bun or ponytail.)

Why:

  1. These clothing pieces stretch and allow you to have fluid movement while in class. It is ideal that you have full range of motion. These pieces also allow the instructor to see your form, and determine if your positioning is correct.

  2. It is important that you are comfortable! Comfort translates to confidence on the dance floor.

  3. It's important to wear form-fitting clothing so that the teacher see and make corrections to your alignment. When students wear loose-fitting or baggy clothing, it's difficult for the instructor to see what needs to be corrected. This is for safety reasons- for students to correctly execute the steps, and also strength is not built unless you have to proper alignment!
