4 Empowering Results of Taking Ballet Class Once a Week
We watch Ballet dancers balance on their toes, turn around and around on one leg, and jump high into the air to land gracefully. One would be forgiven for believing that ballerinas are superhuman. But, the ballerina is a regular human like you — they’ve just put in more hours at the studio than you have! Luckily, you don’t have to train as hard as a professional ballerina to get stronger from Ballet exercises. In as little as one beginner-level class per week, you can expect to see the following benefits in your life:
Mood and Energy
Even the most basic Ballet movements require dynamic physical exertion. Exercise triggers the release of feel-good chemicals in the brain -- serotonin, adrenaline, and endorphins. This greatly clears your mood and has been shown to do everything from lower blood pressure to relieve depression. Exercising can sometimes feel like a chore, so finding something you enjoy will keep you motivated for your consistent workouts and thus assure that you see results. Luckily, Ballet is a lot of fun so you will feel unburdened your new favorite workout!
Posture
Most of us stay hunched over the computer or hunched over the phone for many hours in the day. Proper posture feels unnatural for some of us at first because we’re so used to slouching. In Ballet class, you will find your body is adaptable and you are able to strengthen the muscles that you use to hold your body upright like a Ballet dancer. With the human body’s natural responsiveness, it starts to feel normal to stand up straight. With consistent Ballet practice, it will eventually feel unnatural to slouch. Better posture will allow your to movement to be more productive with less fatigue and strain on your body's ligaments and muscles. It also makes you look and feel better, too!
Injury Prevention
Improper alignment of the body can be caused by weakness of certain muscle groups, which is caused by a sedentary life or by illness. The underuse of these muscles is reinforced when we continue to ignore alignment issues and compensate by overusing other muscles. Ballet tenaciously targets typically under-utilized muscles, so that the whole body becomes stronger. This creates adequate stability so your body is less likely to become injured due to misalignment or general clumsiness.
Confidence
While totally doable, Ballet is daring mentally and physically. Each class presents new ways to improve your technique. Each time you accomplish a new improvement on your Ballet technique, you feel in the zone. As with any consistent exercise, you will feel your success grow week to week and you will feel more and more assured and uplifted each time. You will notice the changes in the way you move after conscientious Ballet practice for a few months. You’ll find yourself moving more easily and gracefully, and feeling balanced and strong.
